“La purezza di una lingua la priva della sua richezza” Johann Georg Hamann
In occasione dell’inaugurazione di Kirchgängerbanger, la prima mostra personale in Italia del collettivo di base a Berlino Slavs and Tatars, a cura di Emanuele Guidi, ar/ge kunst presenta un programma introduttivo di due giorni incentrato sulle tre principali attività che caratterizzano la pratica degli artisti: mostre, libri e lezioni performative. Slavs and Tatars si sono costituiti come ‘book club’ nel 2006 e da allora la loro ricerca ha continuato a fare eco ed espandere l’atto della lettura attraverso una messa in circolazione di storie provenienti dall’ “area a est dell’ex Muro di Berlino e a ovest della Grande Muraglia cinese, conosciuta come Eurasia”.

Come veri bibliofili e storytellers, gli artisti attingono dal bacino di questa vasta regione poetica e geopolitica, resuscitando figure dimenticate così come rituali e tradizioni pre-moderne, per intrecciarle con cultura “alta” e popolare; un gesto che sfida i nostri modi attuali di pensare e i perimetri della nostra conoscenza. Il loro atteggiamento sincretico emerge attraverso la produzione di discorso e oggetti di varia natura, in cui la lingua ha sempre un ruolo centrale nel combinare idee, storie e culture apparentemente molto lontane. Un approccio sensuale e affettivo alla conoscenza che agisce rendendo visibili le crepe e le spaccature della storia.

Con Kirchgängerbanger Slavs and Tatars portano avanti la loro più recente ricerca su Johann Georg Hamann, filosofo Tedesco del contro-Illuminismo, orientalista amatoriale e autore criptico, che grazie alle sue posizioni spiritose, non ortodosse e radicali godeva di alta stima tra i suoi contemporanei come Goethe, Kierkegaard e Kant. Gli artisti ritornano su una figura come Hamann per porre l’accento sui limiti di una conoscenza puramente laica e riaccendere il discorso intorno al ruolo della fede, che il filosofo intendeva come strettamente collegata alla sessualità (Glaube und Geschlecht).

Per la loro mostra presso ar/ge kunst, gli artisti si rivolgono esplicitamente al pubblico (al lettore) attraverso produzioni nuove e recenti, che si rifanno direttamente ai testi enigmatici di Hamann; una serie di opere che traducono spazialmente le sue dediche e i suoi scritti in tutta la loro opacità.

In parallelo con la mostra, un tour di lezioni performative di Slavs and Tatars, è co-organizzato da ar/ge kunst e la Libera Università di Bolzano/Bozen, Facoltà di Design e Arte (18 Maggio, 2018), OGR You Torino (22 Maggio, 2018), and Liveworks/Centrale Fies (20 Luglio, 2018).
