Hans Knapp - Tholos

09 July - 14 August 1993

Tholos-a mental and existential project, a place and an atmosphere, exactitude and extraneation. The word tholos originally referred to the circular Greek constructions which we find in the forms of the temples in Delphi or Athens. Hans Kapp, however, inverts perspective and applies the concept to the cylindrical architectural structures he constructs underground. These tholoi are the object of study for hundreds of plans, sketches, models, perspective studies and photos. They construe an articulated spatial system-an ideal concept of space-that allows an interpretation of the artist's stance with respect to reality, while also enabling the communication of a variety of emotional attitudes.
